Over time, people added to the houses, either doubling the half cape or adding a wing to the rear. Dormers were cut into the roofs to add more space, light and ventilation. The Cape Cod is symmetrical in appearance with a center door and formal, center-hall floor plan. Interiors are simple, featuring wide plank flooring, beaded wainscoting and beamed ceilings. Borrowing from the New England homes of the 17th century, this cottage style has consistently appealed to generations of Americans for its simplicity and charm and is one of the most recognized house styles in North America.
